Magpie runs an income generation crafters project in the village. Crafters have been trained to produce  decorative, handcrafted products which the Studio promotes in addition to the range of homefineware developed by our team of artists.

Christmas Trees

In December 2002 we installed a Christmas Tree above the Bikers Bar in Lower Main Road, Observatory - it led to a tradition that we have kept going every year since we moved our Collectives Studio to Barrydale. Our first experiment with Christmas Trees in the village began with an installation at the local Provincial Clinic. Subsequent we have moved the trees to various locales and have settled on an annual installation right next to the Studio in Van Riebeeck Street. The Trees are constructed using alien Australian Wattle and decorated with recycled PET bottles that have been processed into innovative decorations.

In 2007 and 2008 we had the honour of installing Trees for the Premier of our Province, Helen Zille when she was still Mayor of the City of Cape Town.

Since then - every year on December 16th - the Day of Reconciliation the Magpie's install our Christmas Reconciliation Tree and host a Lighting Ceremony outside out Studio at sunset. The whole district and townsfolk flock to the village and air is filled with festive cheer and light!
